SEO Guide for Home Services Companies

This home services seo guide is the field-tested playbook I built doing SEO for contractors and trade businesses: local search, AI citations, reviews, link building, and technical SEO all in one place.

Home › Resources

This is my SEO guide for home services companies: roofers, HVAC, plumbers, garage door, locksmith and chimney businesses. It supports the main page on home services SEO. It is the order I work in on a new account, with a link to the full playbook for each step. If you only read one section, read step 1.

Home services SEO in the order I do it

1. Google Business Profile and Maps

Most calls for a service business come from the map results. I start with the primary category, service areas, services list, photos and the business name, because a wrong category or a stuffed name holds everything else back. The full process is in my guide to Google Business Profile optimization.

2. Technical SEO for home services

Technical SEO for home services is short but not optional: every service page indexed, the site fast on a phone, a click-to-call number on every page, and LocalBusiness and Service schema that match what the page says. I cover the full checklist in technical SEO for home-service websites.

3. One page per service, one page per city you want

A single "Services" page cannot rank for "water heater repair" and "drain cleaning" at once, which is the core of SEO for plumbing companies. Each service that brings money gets its own page with prices, photos and the questions customers ask on the phone (this is most of the work on a roofing SEO account). I get asked is Thumbtack worth it often enough that I wrote a full answer with the math.

4. Reviews

Reviews affect both Maps rankings and whether the homeowner calls. The fix is a routine, and the routine is in how to get more Google reviews: ask every finished job, by text, the same day.

5. Links and citations

Local links (suppliers, associations, local news, sponsorships) and consistent listings on the directories your market uses. Not bulk directory packages. If you want the order I actually do this work in, my step-by-step plan for contractors lays it out.

6. AI search

ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI answers, which is what generative engine optimization means, pull from the same signals above plus how consistently your business is described across the web. I track AI citations for every client.

7. Measure calls, not rankings

Call tracking and a monthly look at Search Console tell you which pages bring jobs. That decides what to do next month. The rent-versus-own question shows up in every trade, and I compare every channel in lead generation for contractors.

Stay current on what's changing: home-services marketing news.

Who I Am

I specialize in home services SEO: taking websites that sit invisible on page three and turning them into the business Google and ChatGPT recommend first. I started on the developer side, writing software and doing SEO on the side, until I saw how much home-service owners were overpaying for work that quietly hurt them. So I built a method that fixes the broken technical work and the outdated thinking behind it.

From garage door companies to plumbers, roofers, locksmiths and cleaning services, the playbook is the same: rank where your customers actually search, earn real reviews, and back it with a fast site that books the job. No PBNs, no bought reviews, no directory spam. Only work that survives Google’s next five updates. See exactly how it’s priced on the pricing page.
